Scottish Premiership club Glasgow Rangers have a new manager and he could have some real sway when it comes to summer targets at Ibrox.

Ever since Steven Gerrard was named as the new manager of Rangers, speculation has been rife as to who the 37-year-old could bring with him to Ibrox this summer.

Some targets are more obvious – and more realistic – than others, but one has got Rangers fans salivating, with Spanish striker Fernando Torres free this summer.

Steven Gerrard shakes hands with Dave King as he is unveiled as the new manager of Rangers football Club at Ibrox Stadium on May 4, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Torres may be 34 but he could still do a job at Rangers, with plenty before him extending their careers – and excelling in the process – by moving to Scotland in their thirties.

Rangers may now have a talisman in the dugout but they also need a few on the field and, if the 110-capped Spain international was willing to take a pay cut, he could fill his boots for a Gers side in need of some additional spark.

In fact, under Gerrard and at full fitness, Torres could be for Rangers what Henrik Larsson once was for their fierce rivals.

The Swede may have been younger than Torres when he tore up Scottish football but, with the right players behind him, the Atletico Madrid man could be a sensation at Ibrox.

It is a big ask and may be a fairy tale too far this summer for a Rangers side suddenly dreaming big, yet stranger things have happened and the soon-to-be free agent should seriously consider one last hurrah with a man he knows so well.

Torres could be the master to Alfredo Morelos’s apprentice, writing himself into Rangers’ folklore in the process.
