Could Tom Rogic’s sublime form come at a cost for Celtic?

Interest from the Premier League has been surprisingly lacking so far in Celtic playmaker Tom Rogic.

To his credit, Brendan Rodgers is under no illusions that, despite Celtic’s stature and history, the glitz and glamour of the Premier League means their key players are always likely to have their head turned by interest from below the border.

In recent years, some of Celtic’s most important players, Adam Matthews, Joe Ledley, Ki-Sung Yeung and Gary Hooper to name but a few, have swapped frequent silverware at Parkhead for a relegation struggle in England.

So far this summer, Moussa Dembele (below), Stuart Armstrong, Jozo Simunovic and Kieran Tierney have all been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League. And, with all due respect to Celtic, you could forgive them for being tempted by the exposure and pay-packets on offer in Europe’s most moneyed league.

However, while the lack of speculation surrounding Tom Rogic will no doubt be welcomed by Celtic supporters, you wonder why no clubs in England’s top flight have made the Australian playmaker a priority this summer.

According to the World Game in May, there have been no recent concrete offers from Premier League clubs for Rogic and, in the three months since, that does not appear to have changed.

Magic Man

Why is anyone’s guess. Rogic has improved by the season since arriving in Glasgow from Central Coast Mariners in 2012, scoring a career-best 11 goals as The Hoops sealed an unbeaten domestic treble last season.

And he’s started the new season in fine form too, inspiring Celtic to the verge of Champions League qualification. A true Rolls Royce of a midfielder with intelligent movement, vision and a cultured strike, there’s no wonder Brendan Rodgers calls Rogic his ‘Magic Man’.

However, it seems only inevitable that Premier League clubs will take notice of the 24-year-old’s magisterial displays. After all, Rogic may not be Celtic’s most high profile player but he is arguably their most naturally gifted.

The more consistent his performances, the more likely Rogic will find himself at the centre of a transfer tug-of-war.
