Reports in Portugal claim Tottenham Hotspur are interested in Benfica defender Ezequiel Garay.

If you believe the bookies, Louis van Gaal is set to replace Tim Sherwood as Tottenham Hotspur boss at the end of the current campaign. And while previous reports have suggested the Dutchman would be happy to work with the majority of the current Spurs squad, there will no doubt be new arrivals.

One of those could – at least according to the Portuguese press – be Benfica defender Ezequiel Garay.

According to A Bola, Tottenham are interested in the 27-year-old Argentine and sent scouts to watch him during Benfica’s match against Rio Ave.

Garay is no stranger to the rumour mill, having been linked with Manchester United for what seems like every transfer window for the last five years. But while the player with a reported €20million release-clause remains in Portugal for now, one senses this really will be the summer when he moves on.

The centre-back has been a vital component in Benfica’s Primeira Liga charge this season, but with his current deal expiring in the summer of 2015, he may feel the time is right for one last big move.

With doubts over the future of Jan Vertonghen at White Hart Lane, Garay would be the ideal replacement. The latter has missed just one league match for Benfica all season, and has played all but eight minutes during that time.

If the latest report is true, those English fans who have read so much about Garay in countless gossip columns in the past could finally be about to see what he can do in the white of Tottenham.
