The Mail report that the Arsenal winger could be a shock target for Tottenham Hotspur in the summer.
After watching his side be destroyed 5-2 at the Emirates this weekend, it is little wonder Harry Redknapp is feeling a little dazed.
The Mail reported late last night that he is considering launching a bid to sign Theo Walcott from Arsenal.
Walcott of course scored two goals in his side’s victory, shaking off the first half boos from frustrated fans.
The paper say that Walcott would be offered an escape route by Redknapp from the boo-boys, if he chooses to take it.
The accuracy of the story is dependent on three things.
1) Will Redknapp even be at Spurs next season or will he be in the England job?
2) Would Spurs supporters want Walcott at their club? Despite the weekend’s performance he remains inconsistent and is not universally rated.
3) Would Walcott be mad enough to cross the North London divide?
The last player to do so was Sol Campbell, who moved from Spurs to Arsenal in 2001, and was dubbed a ‘Judas’ for switching clubs.
For Campbell, joining Arsenal was a clear step up, which he was able to justify by winning medals. For Walcott, it would surely only be a sideways step, despite what supporters of the two clubs may argue.
Walcott seems a sensible young man, who likes to keep as private a life possible off the pitch, and should be able to see the controversy and hate that such a move would cause.
For this reason alone, we can’t see him going for it. He would surely be crazy to do so.
