While Sunderland’s immediate focus will be on the future of Big Sam, they cannot let it distract from other issues at hand.
The hard work looked to be done when the Mackems survived the drop at Newcastle United’s expense, though the ensuing transfer window has proved surprisingly difficult.
Having seen DeAndre Yedlin return to Tottenham Hotspur at the end of his loan spell, Sunderland are in theory worse off than they were on 15 May, and of all the areas in need of addressing, right-back is arguably their primary concern.

As it happens, Newcastle appear to be giving one away. The Magpies recently added Jesus Gamez from Atletico Madrid, freeing Daryl Janmaat to move on – albeit at a price.
Despite a poor couple of seasons collectively, Janmaat was one of the Tynesiders’ better performers and has drawn interest from Italian giants Juventus, among others.
The Netherlands international would instantly improve Sunderland, whose geographic location would ensure minimal upheaval for the player (though he may have to up his own personal security).

Newcastle’s apparent £10 million asking price (Daily Mail) could be a sticking point, especially with the Black Cats already pulling out of a deal to sign Inter’s Davide Santon – a former Magpies defender himself – over finances.
But what a way it would be to boost spirits on Wearside – while also ruffling a few feathers up the road.
