Sunderland fans may scoff, but a January move for Everton’s Tom Cleverley cannot be ruled out.
Cleverley has reportedly been offered to other clubs ahead of the winter window and Sunderland’s Stadium of Light is perhaps the obvious destination.
With Paddy McNair and Lee Cattermole both ruled out long-term, a new midfielder is sure to feature highly on David Moyes’ shopping list – and with Yann M’Vila ruling himself out, an approach for the man he started 22 times while manager of Manchester United is perhaps all the more likely.
As the threat of relegation looms, Moyes may not have the biggest budget with which to operate, however, Everton – backed by Farhad Moshiri’s millions – may be generous towards their former boss as they clear the decks for likely reinforcements of their own.

Though he has only started five time under new Toffees boss Ronald Koeman, Cleverley boasts good pedigree, having been a key member of Manchester United’s 2012-13 title-winning side and won 13 caps for England.
Things have not quite worked for him since then, but a move to Sunderland could deliver his career the kiss of life it needs.
