David Moyes will have very little funds with which to strengthen his Sunderland squad in January, according to the Guardian.
And as a result, the Black Cats boss will have to be smart in regards to his recruitment, if he plans to make any additions to his squad over the course of next month.
Duncan Watmore has been ruled out for the remainder of the season after sustaining a serious injury, and it is thought that Moyes will subsequently be looking to bolster his attacking options in January.

With limited resources available to him, the Sunderland boss will most likely be scouring the free transfer market, as he looks for quality additions, for little cost.
And an ideal signing for the Wearside outfit would be former Liverpool and Stoke City winger Oussama Assaidi, who is available on a free transfer, following his recent release from Al-Ahli Dubai.
The 28-year-old has all the attributes which Sunderland need in a player at the moment, and his creativity and ability to run at defenders with the ball struck to his feet would be a great asset for David Moyes, as he looks to guide his side away from relegation trouble.

The addition of Assaidi could also help bring out the best in Jermain Defoe.
The Moroccan is renowned for his delivery, and with a goalscorer like Defoe lingering in and around the six-yard box, they could form a potent partnership.
With January just around the corner, Moyes will surely be planning his targets already, and Assaidi should be high on his list of potential signings, if he wants to improve his side’s productivity in the final third.
