Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers signed another player this week, and could Steven Gerrard give him the armband?
Steven Gerrard has told Rangers TV that he is delighted with the capture of Connor Goldson.
The 25-year-old joins Rangers on a four-year deal after struggling for game time at Brighton & Hove Albion in recent years.
The towering centre-back, who stands at 6’3, joins the Gers for about £3.5 million according to The Scottish Sun.
Goldson is the sixth player to arrive at Ibrox this summer, and Gerrard reckons that the big man has enough leadership qualities to ‘defend the badge with his life’.
He told Rangers TV: “In terms of Connor, he’s ready to go. He’s had a frustrating couple of years in terms of being a back-up player at Brighton and he doesn’t see himself as a back-up player and neither do I.
“I see him as a leader, a starter and someone who can come in and cajole the defence and take ownership of that and he’s just glad that it’s finally over the line and he’s a Rangers player, he’s as hungry as anyone to get going.
“That was an area where we needed players but players who fit the profile, who are hungry, who want to come in and defend this badge with their life.”
Captain material?
Lee Wallace’s future at Rangers is up in the air after his verbal assault of Graeme Murty toward the end of last season, which means that Gerrard may have to appoint a new club captain this season.
And going by his latest comments, it seems very possible that he could choose Goldson to wear the armband.
The 38-year-old, who captained Liverpool to a number of major titles including the Champions League, knows a thing or two about what is needed in that role, and few would be surprised if Goldson is the Gers’ next skipper on the back of these glowing comments.
