There are fresh doubts over Steven Caulker’s future at Dundee, so should Rangers manager Steven Gerrard come calling?
The 26-year-old allegedly ‘breached club discipline’ last weekend and incurred the wrath of his manager Neil McCann, before being ordered home.
McCann is understood to be considering whether to give Caulker a chance to redeem himself, with the defender already carrying a fair bit of baggage having suffered from alcohol and gambling problems.
With the Scottish Sun claiming Caulker’s time at Dens Park could be up, perhaps now it would be sensible for Rangers manager Steven Gerrard to come calling, with the Liverpool legend having admitted he is in the market for another centre-back, as reported by the Scotsman.
Gerrard has been working hard bringing in players ahead of the new season, but now needs a replacement for Bruno Alves after his contract was terminated and agreement was made for him to join Serie A outfit Parma.
Caulker did play for Gerrard’s former club Liverpool in 2016 after moving there on loan from QPR, but only made a handful of appearances as as a back-up.
The pair just missed out on being club teammates together, with Gerrard leaving Anfield for LA Galaxy a year before, however they were both involved in the England setup in 2012.
Caulker has had his problems in recent years, but he is still is a great age and remains a physically imposing defender with decent speed to cover himself in sticky situations.
Gerrard oversaw his first victory as a manager when his new-look side beat Bury 6-0 in a pre-season friendly last week, but there will be much sterner tests to come, starting with FK Shkupi in the first round of Europa League qualifying on Thursday.
