Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly interested in signing striker Hee-chan Hwang this summer.

With Hee-chan Hwang struggling to hold down a place in Red Bull Salzburg’s side, it is hardly likely that Tottenham fans were dancing in the street when the London Evening Standard suggested earlier this week that Spurs want the £13 million-rated South Korean, and he would be interested in making the move.

Spurs do not need a talisman striker this summer, of course. But after the disappointing spells endured by Vincent Janssen and Fernando Llorente, the Tottenham fans would be forgiven for expecting Mauricio Pochettino to go after a name that has a marquee air about them but will also be willing to play second fiddle to Harry Kane. It is easier said than done, but the situation has not changed for a number of years.

It remains to be seen if Hwang becomes the latest forward given the chance to be Kane’s understudy. But while the reported interest may be met with little fanfare right now, perhaps there is one way for the 22-year-old to endear himself to the Spurs supporters before the summer.

Salzburg are one of the four teams that remain in the Europa League, but need to overturn a 2-0 deficit if they hope to reach the final – where they may come up against Arsenal.

Overcoming Marseille in the last four will not be easy, but the Austrians’ came back from a 4-2 first-leg defeat in their quarter-final tie with Lazio, with Hwang scoring one of the goals as they won the reverse fixture 4-1.

Meanwhile, in tonight’s other semi-final, the Gunners face the somewhat daunting task of trying to win away at Atletico Madrid after the first-leg ended in a 1-1 draw at the Emirates.

Should Salzburg and Arsenal pull off the two surprise results, Hwang could have the perfect chance to make himself a Tottenham hero before the window even opens by helping ruin Arsene Wenger’s hopes of leaving Arsenal with one final trophy.
