Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly interested in signing Nathan Ake from Bournemouth during the January transfer window.

It was reported by the Daily Star this week that Tottenham are taking on Manchester United in the race to sign £40 million-rated Nathan Ake from Bournemouth as Mauricio Pochettino eyes a potential replacement for Toby Alderweireld.

Ake has been impressive for the Cherries, and seems to fit the mould perfectly for the kind of signing that Mauricio Pochettino has arguably become synonymous with given his current promise and significant potential to improve considerably still.

If Alderweireld is exit-bound, then Ake may be a good signing for the coming years. But his spell at the Vitality Stadium on its own may not leave all Spurs supporters entirely convinced – so perhaps this international break could be crucial.

Ake has been called up into the Netherlands squad for their Nations League tie with Germany and their friendly with Belgium. It is going to a big test for Ronald Koeman’s men as they continue to try and recover from failing to qualify for this summer’s World Cup.

Not only will the German and Belgian attacks test the Netherlands’ defence like few nations can, but if Ake can stand out amongst a cluster of options such as Virgil van Dijk, Stefan de Vrij and Spurs summer target Matthjis de Ligt (via Football London), then any concerns Spurs have should be alleviated.

Ake is lining up alongside world class defenders and against world class forwards during this break. Perhaps therefore, his next one or two performances could have a major say in how seriously Tottenham pursue a deal in January.
