Sunderland are set to take on Aston Villa for the signature of Sam Johnstone from Manchester United.
According to a report in the Daily Mail, Sunderland are in competition with Aston Villa for the signature of Sam Johnstone – and the Black Cats’ appointment of Simon Grayson could give them the edge in the race for the youngster’s signature.
Johnstone has worked with Grayson at Preston North End previously, and the Manchester United youngster is a big fan of the 47-year-old boss.
Johnstone enjoyed arguably the best period of his career at Deepdale, when he was a first choice for the Lilywhites during the 2014/15 campaign.
And the potential to reunite with Grayson at the Stadium of Light could appeal to the 24-year-old stopper.
Sunderland are yet to make a signing this summer, but they will be on the look out for a new goalkeeper.
Jordan Pickford’s departure to Everton has left Sunderland needing to purchase a new number one.
And it would hardly be a surprise of Johnstone was on Grayson’s radar.
And although Sunderland will face competition for Johnstone from Villa, Grayson’s arrival at the Stadium of Light could give them an advantage in the race to sign the talented youngster.
