The midfielder provided a rare moment of quality in a woeful season for Everton.
There hasn’t been much for Everton supporters to smile about this season and there was further frustration yesterday as they fell to a 4-1 defeat away to Southampton.
However, a stunning strike from summer signing Gylfi Sigurdsson, which temporarily pulled Everton level, was a rare bright spot.
Like many Everton players, Sigurdsson’s overall performances have been underwhelming so far this season, with the Iceland international certainly yet to justify his £45 million price tag.
Sigurdsson has been used in various different positions so far this campaign – on either flank, as an attacking midfielder and slightly deeper – but he has often struggled to make much of an impact.
The 28-year-old’s goal provided a reminder of the quality he possesses and perhaps indicates that he could still turn out to be a successful signing for Everton, if given guidance under the correct manager.
Sigurdsson has a considerable amount of Premier League experience and is closing in on 200 games in the English top flight.
When at his best and full of confidence, Sigurdsson is capable of linking play to excellent effect, while he also provides a significant threat from set-pieces.
It certainly hasn’t worked out for Sigurdsson at Everton so far but he has the quality to turn his situation around and, if the side was the be built around him and he was the main creative threat, he could well turn out to be a success for the Toffees.
