Middlesbrough will make another bid for Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Kieren Westwood, with Leeds United’s Rob Green the back-up option.
With both Victor Valdes and Brad Guzan bidding farewell to Teeside following Middlesbrough’s relegation from the Premier League, a new goalkeeper was one of the first tasks on manager Garry Monk’s to-do list.
The 32-year-old has been one of the most impressive shot-stoppers in the Championship since arriving at Hillsborough from Sunderland in 2014, helping Carlos Carvalhal’s side reach the play-offs in each of the last two seasons.
Kieren Westwood is Boro’s first choice
The report adds that this form has caught the eye of Monk and Boro remain interested despite having a £3 million bid rejected last month.
Boro have also been linked with veteran Leeds United goalkeeper Rob Green, who Monk brought to Elland Road from Queens Park Rangers last summer, but it appears that Westwood is Boro’s priority with an offer already registered this summer, the Northern Echo adds.
37-year-old Green enjoyed an impressive debut season at Elland Road, improving as the season progressed and earning Leeds countless points with a number of virtuoso performances.
However, despite the addition of Werder Bremen goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald, Green’s departure would not be welcomed by Leeds – especially with Marco Silvestri linked with a return to Italy, as reported by the Yorkshire Evening Post.
Leeds’ Robert Green
If Wiedwald, who struggled for form in the Bundesliga, doesn’t settle immediately, Green would be an experienced and reliable alternative.
Therefore, The Whites may be hoping that Wednesday are little more receptive to another offer for Westwood as Boro threaten to make a move for the former England number one.
