Baker, who signed a new two-and-a-half-year deal with Sheffield Wednesday this week, has made the first team subs bench on eight occasions this season.

Ashley Baker was conspicuous by his absence as Sheffield Wednesday’s Under-23s lost their title decider against Burnley on Friday afternoon.

Wednesday needed only a point to win the Professional Development League 2 northern title, but instead ended the campaign in third position, missing out on a play-off tie against either Charlton Athletic or Crystal Palace from the southern section.

The Owls fielded a strong-ish XI against the Clarets, with recent first team appearance makers Connor O’Grady, Jack Stobbs and Connor Kirby all involved.

And Baker’s omission could hold significance, as Wednesday’s first team head to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday with only one fit right-back, following the news that Jack Hunt will miss season’s final two fixtures.

The 21-year-old, who signed a new two-and-a-half-year deal at Hillsborough this week, has been named among the first team substitutes on eight occasions this campaign, but has yet to make his bow.

And after Jos Luhukay’s vow to give youth a chance next term, it would be little surprise to see Baker’s wait come to an end at Molineux – be it from the start or otherwise.
