Could Sheffield Wednesday really sign Aaron Mooy this summer?

Sheffield Wednesday are the latest club to be linked with a move for the Manchester Cigy midfielder, who has shone on loan to Huddersfield Town.

Huddersfield Town’s on loan midfielder Aaron Mooy could be a target for Sheffield Wednesday, Alan Biggs writes in the Sheffield Telegraph.

The Australian has enjoyed an impressive season away from parent club Manchester City, who are said to want around £10 million to part with the player they picked up for next to nothing.

So could the Owls really get him to Hillsborough?

The chairman’s vow

The Owls’ Thai owner insists he will do “everything possible and in my power” to ensure that promotion is achieved next season – a statement his track record would suggest is not to be taken lightly. Wednesday have twice broken their transfer record under Dejphon Chansiri [or at least they will have once Jordan Rhodes’ transfer is finalised] and it would be little surprise if they made it a hat-trick this summer. A move for Mooy would do it.

But other areas need strengthening

Although Wednesday’s midfield could be improved, there are at least two positions [I’m thinking in central defence and out wide] that are perhaps in greater need of attention, and the Owls will be well aware of the potential costs involved. Carlos Carvalhal’s side were priced out of the centre-back market last summer – by the Portuguese’s own admission – while a reported £5 million was spent on winger Adam Reach, who is yet to fully convince. With the Rhodes money due to come out of next season’s budget and Financial Fair Play restrictions to adhere to, Mooy is perhaps a luxury that Wednesday cannot stretch to.

They can’t be the only ones after him?

Huddersfield are perhaps in pole position should they go up, although the two already promoted sides – Newcastle United and Brighton & Hove Albion – have both been strongly linked. Whether Wednesday can afford it or not, Mooy is almost certain to be playing Premier League football next term.

Verdict: 3/10… but stranger things have happened.
