With Phil Jagielka out of favour at Everton under Sam Allardyce could Sheffield United renew interest in their former star?

Since Sam Allardyce was appointed Everton manager on November 30 club captain Phil Jagielka has played just 12 minutes of competitive action across five matches.

That has come in two substitute appearances in the Premier League as Allardyce has established a central defensive partnership of Mason Holgate and Ashley Williams.

With summer signing Michael Keane also on the books it is beginning to look like Jagielka’s opportunities at Goodison Park could continue to be extremely limited.

If that is the case could Sheffield United reignite their interest in the 35-year-old having shown signs of trying to re-sign the centre-back over the summer?

The Sheffield Star reported in June that the Blades had made contact about potentially bringing Jagielka – who came through the ranks at the Yorkshire club and spent seven years in their first team – back to Bramall Lane.

At the time the issue would have been the veteran’s wages, with him said to be earning around £50,000-a-week, and United would still need the Toffees skipper to take a pay cut in order to sign him in the future.

Yet with manager Chris Wilder admitting there is a chance defensive loanee Cameron Carter-Vickers could return to Tottenham Hotspur in the January transfer window, could Jagielka represent a realistic contingency plan?
