Sergio Quintero is linked with a move to Celtic this month.

Sergio Quintero has confirmed that Celtic are negotiating with Imbabura to sign him, and that an agreement must be made this week.

Speaking to El Universo, the 20-year-old midfielder said: “The representatives of Celtic were talking with the president of Imbabura. We have to reach an agreement this week,” he said.

“But if things do not happen I have proposals from other sides and also from Ecuador. You have to make the best decision.”

Quintero was a star of Ecuador’s Under-20 World Cup campaign and if he does join the Hoops, could it be as Scott Brown’s long-term replacement?

The South American youngster is a defensive midfielder who is nicknamed ‘The Machine’ and such a moniker no doubt suggests that he could be drafted in to replace the legendary Brown one day.

Brown turned 34 last month and nobody dares to write him off, given that he invariably bounces back from suggestions that he’s finished, but one day Celtic will have to look to the future – and Quintero might have the qualities to do that job.

As of right now, the Bhoys don’t really have a long-term successor already at the club, apart from Eboue Kouassi, but he has never looked like the £3 million signing that he was.

Neil Lennon needs somebody young and steely if they’re going to fulfill the Brown role successfully, and Quintero, based on the sort of player he is, might be the perfect candidate.
