Could Serge Atakayi benefit if Rangers lose in Harry Wilson race?

Glasgow Rangers are keen to bring Harry Wilson to Ibrox this summer, but perhaps missing out on the winger could benefit one Gers prospect.

According to a recent report from The Scottish Sun, Rangers’ hopes of landing Harry Wilson on loan for the coming campaign may have suffered a potential blow with the winger’s list of admirers continuing to grow.

The Scottish Sun reports that Celtic are now keen on signing the Liverpool youngster, so perhaps there could be an interesting battle on the cards between the two Old Firm sides before a ball has even been kicked in the new Scottish Premiership season.

Should Rangers miss out on Wilson, it would certainly be a blow for the Gers as the 21-year-old was hugely impressive when he went out on loan to Hull last season, scoring seven goals in just 13 games. But if it is Celtic that ultimately win the race, that would arguably be a massive setback for Steven Gerrard, especially as some may have felt that his Merseyside connections may have handed him something of safety net when it comes to getting players in.

But while losing the race for Wilson would be disappointing, there are some players within the Rangers squad that may benefit – and one of those may well be Serge Atakayi after his display during the Gers’ behind closed doors friendly with TNS on Tuesday.

Atakayi is one of the brightest talents in the Gers’ youth ranks and he got the chance to prove a point to Gerrard when he featured in the game this week. And he seemed to take the chance, as he scored one of Rangers’ goals in the 3-1 win.

Gerrard may not be making major selection decisions off the back of the first friendly of the summer, but Atakayi undoubtedly did his chances of featuring in the senior side next season no harm at all with a goal. The performance may help keep him in contention for now, and he may have a chance to build on that momentum in the coming weeks.

If he can take that opportunity, then he may become one of the biggest beneficiaries if Wilson does not end up joining Rangers this summer. But if he does get that shot, Atakayi will be tasked with doing all he can to make sure that the Gers are not ruing the fact that Wilson headed elsewhere.
