What an awful transfer window it was for Arsenal in January.
Despite promising so much in the form of speculation about Arthur Melo and Dusan Vlahovic, Austin Trusty was the only player to join Arsenal last month.
Not only that, but the Gunners also released a number of high-profile players, including Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
The Gabon international had his contract terminated in North London, allowing him to join Barcelona on a free transfer on Wednesday evening.
Arsenal still need midfielders after loaning out Ainsley Maitland-Niles and not replacing him.
And club legend Kevin Campbell believes the addition of Jack Wilshere on a free could be a serious alternative for Edu and Mikel Arteta.
Wilshere has been training at Arsenal on a regular basis in recent months and even went to Dubai with the squad for a warm weather traning camp.
Here’s what Campbell has said:
He told The Highbury Squad podcast on YouTube: “He don’t need a transfer window because he’s free. He might just get the last few months of the season, the opportunity to occupy our bench.
“He’s been training with the team for quite a while and look, we’ve got nobody! Even if it’s for 15 minutes. Not to say I love Jack Wilshere, I think he’s an absolute diamond but you know what, I could see it happening.”
You get the feeling that Arteta has to be considering a return for Wilshere – a proper return.
If not, why bring him on the visit to Dubai in recent weeks?
Wilshere is very much apart of this squad without being apart of the squad and having signed nobody in January, well maybe, just maybe, the Spanish manager and Edu could make it official.
