Glasgow Rangers defender Lee Hodson would be forgiven for feeling that his Ibrox future hinges on his success out on loan.

With Rangers’ full-back options strengthened significantly over the summer, it would probably surprise many if Lee Hodson featured in Steven Gerrard’s plans at all once he returns from his loan spell at the end of the season.

Hodson has endured a difficult time since moving to Ibrox while Mark Warburton was in charge. Initially, his defensive displays left some fans feeling encouraged that he could put some serious pressure on James Tavernier – some even called for him to be ahead of the Englishman on a couple of occasions – and add depth to their options on the left-hand side of defence.

But the Northern Irishman never capitalised on that initial promise and has spent much of the last year on the periphery of the squad. His performances were often criticised by the supporters, and it was little surprise that he ended up leaving in the summer.

The move to St Mirren appears to represent Hodson’s final chance to salvage his Gers career. It seems unlikely that he will force his way back into the Ibrox fold, but Gerrard would surely not rule it out if the defender enjoys a brilliant spell with the Scottish Premiership newbies.

But if Hodson is hoping to use his loan spell to get back into the picture at Rangers, he has already perhaps suffered a significant setback with the news that Alan Stubbs has been sacked by the club in the wake of their 4-1 defeat to Hearts, which saw Hodson play the full 90 minutes.

Stubbs’ dismissal could be a blow for Hodson if the new manager decides to make some big changes to try and get the side back on track and the Rangers-owned ace is one of the players who loses his spot in the team.

It could be that the next manager inspires a dramatic turnaround and Hodson thrives under the new regime. But with Stubbs being the man to sign Hodson, his departure must leave the defender wondering whether his attempts to get his career back on track are about to suffer another setback.
