Joe Royle has left Everton so could David Unsworth follow his mentor out of the door?

After more than three years it was announced on Tuesday (December 5) that Joe Royle had left his role as part of Everton’s backroom staff.

This comes less than a week after Sam Allardyce was named as the club’s new manager, with speculation that Royle’s departure was part of a shakeup behind the scenes from the new boss.

The 68-year-old – who also played for and managed the Toffees, winning their last piece of silverware with FA Cup triumph in 1995 – returned to Goodison Park in 2014 to help develop youth players.

Royle worked alongside Under-23s manager David Unsworth in the academy and was also a key advisor during the two times the latter was named caretaker – most recently for an eight-game spell following the sacking of Ronald Koeman and before the appointment of Allardyce.

With the club legend having now left, will that see Unsworth also follow his mentor out of the door – especially if the 44-year-old wants to seriously pursue a career in management?

During his time as interim the former defender made no secret of the fact he wanted the job permanently, as outlined by the Independent, and with the Merseysiders having now gone with Allardyce he will have to leave if he wants a first team position.
