Newcastle United winger Rolando Aarons has made a bright start to his loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday.
Having failed to pull up trees in his previous loan spells, it appeared that Rolando Aarons was fighting a losing battle when it came to trying to save his Newcastle career when he headed out to Sheffield Wednesday in January.
The winger was once considered one of the most exciting talents in the Magpies squad. He has not kicked on under Rafa Benitez however, and subsequently struggled with Hellas Verona and, more worryingly, Slovan Liberec.
It appeared that the Owls were taking a gamble by signing the 23-year-old on loan during the winter window. Steve Bruce’s men had an outside chance of making their way into the play-off discussion in the Championship.
In truth, Wednesday’s top six hopes remain slim. They actually only sit six points off, but as they sit 11th in the table, they are relying on a lot of sides enduring poor ends to the campaign.
But for Aarons, this spell is threatening to become the turning point in his St James’ Park career. He bagged his first goal for the club on Tuesday in the 2-0 win away at Bolton Wanderers. It was a smart finish as he found the roof of the net as his slid onto a through ball.
If he continues to maintain his current form, he could return to St James’ Park with a huge amount of confidence. And given his previous potential, Benitez should seriously consider trying to work his magic on the former England under-20 international in pre-season.
Newcastle are enjoying a much better run of form, scoring seven goals across their last three wins. But there have got to be questions asked this summer about the depth that they have in attacking areas, especially with the likes of Kenedy and Salomon Rondon only on Tyneside on loan.
Those questions may lead to Benitez handing fresh chances to some of those who are yet to make a significant mark at Newcastle, and Aarons is showing why he should be one of the players who gets another opportunity.
