Could Rodgers appointment help Arsenal finally land Luis Suarez?

Brendan Rodgers is reportedly in the frame to succeed Arsene Wenger as Arsenal boss.

According to a report from the Daily Mirror towards the end of last month, Brendan Rodgers is one of the names that Arsenal are considering as they begin to plan for life without Arsene Wenger.

Wenger’s tenure appears to be coming to a conclusion. The Mirror reports that his contract expires in 2019, but the Gunners hierarchy are planning to review the situation at the end of this season, and Rodgers is one of the names in the frame.

Despite the miserable times that the fans have had to endure at the Emirates lately, it seems highly likely that many Arsenal supporters would see appointing Rodgers as an underwhelming move.

He endured a mixed time at Liverpool – that did, admittedly, almost culminate in a Premier League title at one stage – and Celtic’s inability to be quite as dominate this term as they were during his first year at Parkhead has probably done his chances of winning the fans round few favours.

But while Rodgers may be deemed by some to be a slightly disappointing option, perhaps it is the 45-year-old who would hand Arsenal their very best chance of finally landing Luis Suarez at some stage in the future five years after their infamous bid of £40,000,001.

The Mirror reported last year that Wenger felt that he had agreed personal terms with the Uruguayan to make the move to Arsenal in 2013, only for the Gunners to be mislead regarding the existence of the clause which prompted the very bizarre bid.

But perhaps when Suarez decides it is time to leave Barcelona, an Arsenal side led by Rodgers may be an appealing option for the 31-year-old, who was simply sensational during his time working with Rodgers at Anfield.

In his final season on Merseyside – when Rodgers so nearly led the Reds to the title – Suarez scored 31 goals in just 33 league games, so when he decides to seek a fresh challenge after Barca, perhaps linking up with Rodgers again if he is at the right club may be tempting.

And given that Wenger felt that Suarez was willing to join in 2013, Arsenal, if the circumstances are right, should have little problem trying to convince the striker – who has scored 105 goals in just 121 La Liga games – to make the switch that is already five years in the making.
