The Leeds United youngster’s loan spell ends in early January.
As reported by the Yorkshire Evening Post, Leeds United are waiting to discover the severity of Caleb Ekuban’s latest injury, with scans due on the blow he received to his foot against Queens Park Rangers last weekend; and the outcome could determine what the Whites opt to do with another of their strikers next month.
Mallik Wilks is currently on loan at Accrington Stanley, for whom he has scored five goals in 20 appearances to date.
Used predominantly as a late substitute, the 18-year-old has done his reputation no harm at all during his time at the League Two club but, with his current loan deal expiring on 3 January, Leeds boss Thomas Christiansen has a decision to make.
If he has all his senior strikers available, the likelihood is that the Leeds manager will send Wilks back out on loan. However, if the impressive Ekuban is ruled out for any stretch of time, the teenager may get the chance to prove his worth at Elland Road sooner than initially thought.
With Pierre-Michel Lasogga also blighted by injury in recent weeks, and the jury out on Pawel Cibicki despite an impressive performance last time out, Leeds will not want to rue any missed opportunities as they bid to secure promotion in 2018.
That could see Wilks brought back into the fold and potentially given chances to further develop his blossoming reputation as a super-sub.
Leeds fans will be hoping Ekuban is fine; however if he is not, Christiansen will need to put his faith elsewhere and Wilks deserves a chance.
