Scottish Premiership powerhouses Rangers are reportedly hoping to bring Josip Vukovic to Ibrox from Primeira Liga outfit Maritimo.

Nikica Jelavic of Rangers celebrates after scoring during the Clydesdale Bank Premier League match between Rangers and Hearts at Ibrox Stadium on May 7, 2011 in Glasgow, Scotland.

When was the last time Rangers paid £4 million for a single player?

The answer is 2010, when Nikica Jelavic moved to Ibrox from Rapid Vienna for a fee that made him one of the most expensive players in the club’s history, as reported by the Goal.

Since then, Rangers have gone through a financial nightmare, being demoted to the fourth tier and, despite fighting their way back to the top, they have not operated with the same muscle in the transfer market in recent seasons.

But do reports from talkSPORT on Wednesday suggest that Croatian midfielder Josip Vukovic could become Rangers’ most expensive signing since Jelavic nine years ago?

It is understood that Steven Gerrard’s side is keeping a close eye on the 26-year-old Maritimo enforcer, who is also a target for Premier League quartet Wolves, Watford, Leicester City and Chelsea.

And how much would Vukovic cost? £4million , according to talkSPORT.

Whether Rangers really need a new midfielder, particularly with Greg Docherty set to return from an impressive loan spell at Shrewsbury Town, is up for debate.

But, if Vukovic does arrive at Ibrox for £4 million, that would be a real statement of intent for a club dreaming of bringing the good times back.
