Glasgow Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has previously spoken about keeping Joe Worrall at Ibrox.
In comments reported by the Sunday Post, Steven Gerrard suggested back in September that he would love to be able to get his loan signings at Rangers tied down to permanent deals, with Joe Worrall one of those currently at Ibrox on a temporary basis.
Since then, Worrall has been a key figure in his plans. So despite the centre-back’s recent mistake in the defeat to Kilmarnock, you would imagine that the Gers boss would still be interested in keeping Worrall beyond this season.
And perhaps there is a chance that the defender’s parent club may pursue a transfer that could make a permanent stay at Rangers look more possible.
The Daily Mirror recently reported that Nottingham Forest want to sign Reece Oxford from West Ham in an £8 million deal. Should they manage to get a deal across the line, it could potentially prove to be an ominous sign for Worrall, especially as new manager Martin O’Neill has already strengthened his centre-back options this month with the move for Yohan Benalouane (via BBC Sport).
It would probably still be a surprise if Forest were happy to sell Worrall in the summer. But if Oxford joins, O’Neill will have two of his own signings through the door in the youngster’s position, and that could hint that he could struggle for game-time if he stays at the City Ground.
And that should perhaps encourage Gerrard to see if Rangers can agree another deal for Worrall in the summer. While he needs to prove his doubters wrong once again, his Old Firm display before the winter break highlighted just how brilliant a signing he could prove to be if the Gers can keep him.
