The Tigers were promoted to the Premier League at Wednesday’s expense in May.
Carvalhal’s side came agonisingly close to promotion
By the end of this summer Sheffield Wednesday could be sick of the sight of Hull City.
The Tigers’ May victory at Wembley saw them promoted to the Premier League at Wednesday’s expense, but could one of the Owls’ most prized possessions be set to join them en route?
Goalkeeper Keiren Westwood was linked with Steve Bruce’s side in the aftermath of that 1-0 win, along with three other top flight clubs (Daily Mail), though the alleged interest appears to have cooled of late.
However, after Westwood’s Hull counterpart Allan McGregor was ruled out for up to six months on Monday, could the Owls be braced for an unwelcome phone call?
Hull’s McGregor could miss half the campaign
As things stand they would have no reason to answer. Head coach Carlos Carvalhal is currently readying a promotion-worthy recruitment drive, while Westwood remains under contract for another two campaigns. Arguably, Hillsborough has not been as attractive a place to play football in more than two decades.
Westwood was one of the Owls’ star performers last term
But let’s not pretend a move to Hull wouldn’t appeal – if only slightly (it’s Kingston-upon-Hull after all). At 31, this could be Westwood’s final shot at regular football in England’s top tier, with Wednesday’s challenge far more grave this time around.
He’d also reunite with the manager who signed him for Sunderland five years ago – only for Bruce to be handed his P45 just a few months later – and almost certainly collect a heavier wage packet.
While you shouldn’t take any of this as gospel, it’s good be prepared, no?
