Reading’s play-off final defeat against Huddersfield Town could signal the end of Daniel Williams’ Royals career.

The American midfielder was one of Reading’s standout performers this past season, but unlike other key men Ali Al Habsi, Yann Kermorgant and Garath McCleary, he is yet to extend his contract with Jaap Stam’s side beyond the end of the campaign.

Aston Villa, Sunderland and Newcastle United were all linked with moves for Williams during last summer’s transfer window [Daily Mail], so could the trio renew their interest this time around?

What would he offer?

Despite being blessed with all the physical attributes to succeed as a defensive midfielder, there is far more to Williams’ game than simply out-muscling opponents, willing tackles and other such donkey work. The 28-year-old has bags of energy and is an excellent ball carrier, which has been key to driving Reading further up the pitch this season. You don’t become a regular in Stam’s side without being able to play a bit, too.

Do they still need him?

Aston Villa may have strengthened in Williams’ position in January, but a bit more bite would perhaps not go amiss in case Mile Jedinak cannot play, while Sunderland and Newcastle are almost certain to add in his position. The Mackems are expected to lose Jan Kirchoff and Jason Denayer this summer, while January recruit Darron Gibson has failed to impress so far, whereas the Magpies have yet to replace Chieck Tiote and could yet release Vurnon Anita.

Can an approach be expected?

Both Aston Villa and Sunderland have changer managers since they were last linked with Williams, although a player of his quality is unlikely to be ignored, especially not on a free transfer. Rafa Benitez remains in charge of Newcastle, but may feel he has bigger fish to fry with United a Premier League side once again.

HITC’s view: With Sunderland seemingly no closer to appointing new boss, Aston Villa could be the ones to watch if Williams doesn’t re-sign for Reading.
