Portuguese boss Vitor Pereira is a leading contender to replace Walter Zenga at Wolverhampton Wanderers, according to the Daily Mirror.
Bookmakers SkyBet currently have the Portuguese at 8/1 – below only Dougie Freedman (1/1) and Sam Allardyce (3/1).
With super-agent Jorge Mendes said to be pulling the strings at Molineux, it is entirely plausible that Pereira – a fellow Portuguese – could be Wolves’ man.
Pereira rose to prominence as assistant to Andre Villas Boas at Porto, later taking the reins himself at Estadio do Dragao.
Since then, the 48-year-old has had short spells with Al-Ahli, Olympiacos and Fenerbahce, with whom he spent 14 months until August this year.
Now a free agent, Pereira would certainly be a cost-effective option, and is perhaps a good bet to get the best out of Wolves’ heavy Portuguese contingent – comprising Silvio, Helder Costa, Joao Teixeira and record buy Ivan Cavaleiro.
But could he add another to his ranks, if appointed?
Raul Meireles played under Pereira at Fenerbahce – and briefly at Porto when Villas Boas was at the helm – but was released by his fellow countryman at the end of last season after a succession of injuries.
Now fit, the 33-year-old, formerly of Liverpool and Chelsea, was said to be on the verge of a move to Lazio last month, however a deal failed to manifest – leaving Wolves and Pereira free to swoop, should they wish.
Though Wolves currently have an abundance of central midfielders, players of Meireles’ calibre – a five-time league and once Champions League winner – don’t become available every day and Pereira may be keen to get his own bodies on board.
