Jon Flanagan only joined Glasgow Rangers in the summer, but has struggled to hold down a regular spot at Ibrox.
After featuring for just 45 minutes across Rangers’ last five matches, it seems fair to say that Jon Flanagan has fallen out of favour somewhat in recent times.
Flanagan made a bright start to life at Ibrox after arriving in the summer. However, he never quite managed to look completely natural at left-back and James Tavernier’s form has prevented him getting much of a look-in in his favoured position.
With Borna Barisic now back, Flanagan has become more of a peripheral figure. His versatility makes him a great option to have on the bench, but his form before dropping out of the side did little to dampen the excitement about Barisic’s return.
But could the situation be about to get slightly worse for Flanagan?
Both men are highly rated and are capable of playing at full-back, with Polster a right-back and Gutman able to play on the other flank.
Should Gerrard feel that either man is capable of making an impact and offers them a contract, that would be a major vote of confidence given the depth that Rangers already boast in both positions.
And that would seemingly hint that Flanagan could find himself further down the pecking order in at least one of the two positions he is a genuine option for. Polster, in particular, provides a similar amount of versatility to Flanagan due to his ability to play in midfield.
It would be a surprise if Gerrard had any desire to move his former Liverpool teammate off the books. He arrived on a free transfer and has certainly not been a bad signing.
But with the possibility of more competition for a place in the Gers side, Flanagan must be wondering whether the club signing either of the trialists could be bad news for him.
