Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers signed up James Tavernier, but could they struggle to extend Josh Windass’s contract?
Signing James Tavernier up to a new deal represents one of Rangers’ biggest wins of the season.
The 26-year-old has been brilliant for Rangers in the 2017-18 campaign and tying him down to a new deal until 2021 is great news for the Ibrox club.
Naturally, the emphasis has now shifted to whether the Gers can get Josh Windass to follow suit and re-sign but as much as fans would love to see him put pen to paper, it could be a lot harder than it was with Tavernier.
The 24-year-old playmaker, who has 12 goals in all competitions, attracted interest from a number of Championship clubs during the January transfer window, after The Sunday Post credited Leeds and Preston with an interest, and he can expect to be the subject of some pretty exciting transfer speculation when the summer window opens.
Tavernier was also linked with a return to English football, after Sunderland were reportedly plotting a move (Daily Mail), but it might be much more difficult for Windass to turn up his nose at a move to the Championship.
After all, Tavernier has had a taste of life England’s second tier, following a stint with Wigan Athletic, whereas the highest level that Windass has experienced was League Two, after joining from Accrington in 2016.
The young number 10 must be curious to see how he measures up in the Championship, which is a step closer to the Premier League and surely that also appeals to him in a big way.
The good news for Rangers is that Windass has another two-and-a-half years to go on his contract, and therefore will fetch quite a decent transfer fee, but the bad news is that it’ll be difficult to get him to agree an extension so long as he is appealing to Championship clubs.
