Steven Gerrard is being linked with a move to Glasgow Rangers, so could he bring one of Liverpool’s brightest prospects to Ibrox?

While Steven Gerrard may have little managerial experience on his CV, there is no question that Rangers appointing the former England captain would be a big statement from the Gers given the 37-year-old’s stature in the game.

BBC Sport reports that the Gers have included Gerrard on their shortlist as they consider who will manage the side beyond this season with Graeme Murty unlikely to keep the job for much longer.

Given Gerrard’s links with Liverpool – he is currently an academy coach at Anfield – it would be little surprise, if he did get the job, if he looked to use his connections with the Champions League semi-finalists when he considered potential targets for Rangers. And perhaps the one who should be at the very top of his list of ambitious targets is Dominic Solanke.

Solanke has played a peripheral role for the first-team this term, so it would certainly seem unlikely that a deal could be done. But if Jurgen Klopp decides to strengthen his striker options further this summer, perhaps he may be open to the idea of letting the talented forward leave for a temporary spell – and Rangers should, at least, ask about a potential move for the £20,000-a-week youngster (via Spotrac).

Solanke is a huge talent – 19 Premier League appearances for the Reds this season undoubtedly proves that – but he is yet to fully find his feet on Merseyside and his first goal continues to elude him, and a loan move may be beneficial.

If he does become available, Rangers should certainly make a bid in the hope that Gerrard’s connection with Liverpool will tempt Klopp to allow him to move to Ibrox. And if they do manage to get something done, it may prove particularly sickening for Celtic given that they wanted to sign the 20-year-old this time last year.

The Sun reported in May 2017 that the Hoops were very interested in the youngster, but, of course, he would end up heading to Anfield. And if Gerrard was appointed at Rangers and managed to convince Solanke to follow him the same path for a loan switch, it could perhaps have the potential to be a game-changing deal for the Gers.
