Ally McCoist has not turned his back on management, but it would take a special job to tempt him back; could Rangers be it?
Ally McCoist says it would take something special to tempt him back into management more than three years after stepping away from the job.
The one and only time to date that McCoist has been number one in the dugout came at Rangers between 2011 and 2014, during which time he guided them to two promotions following their demotion to the fourth tier of Scottish football.
Since leaving that post in December 2014, the 55-year-old has been working as a pundit but says that taking another managerial role isn’t out of the question.
“I wouldn’t say management is behind me now, but it would need to be something that really interested me if I was to start taking my family down that route again,” McCoist told the Herald.
“I’m quite happy where I am at the moment, doing what I’m doing.”
Could a return to his beloved Gers, where he spent 15 years as a player, be the role that tempts McCoist back into a position as a manager?
After all, following Pedro Caixinha’s sacking in October the former striker told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show on Talksport that succeeding the Portuguese would interest him:
“I think we’re maybe getting a wee bit ahead of ourselves…but listen, it’s my club and you never turn your back on your club.
“It’s my team, it’s the only team I’ve ever supported, I played for them for 15 years, I was lucky enough to be assistant there under Walter [Smith] and it was the greatest privilege of my life to manage the club.
“Of course I’d speak to them, but that said it’s so important that we get the right man in charge.”
In the end current boss Graeme Murty was given the job on a caretaker basis until the end of this season, but as the Scottish Sun reports there are doubts over whether Murty will be given the position on a permanent basis.
So if the Glasgow side are on the lookout for a new boss this summer could club legend McCoist be in the frame once again?
