Glasgow Rangers have seemingly received a boost as they look to keep James Tavernier at Ibrox.

It appears that one of Rangers’ toughest tasks in January could well end up being keeping James Tavernier at Ibrox, with the Gers captain already attracting Premier League attention of the window.

Sky Sports reported earlier this month that Brighton are plotting a move for the right-back, who, with his brace of penalties on Sunday, is actually now Rangers’ top goalscorer in the Scottish Premiership this season with five strikes to his name.

Losing Tavernier therefore, would unquestionably be a huge blow for Rangers, especially if they remain in the Europa League and have a decent chance of winning the league title by the time January arrives.

But perhaps Steven Gerrard has received a potential boost as he looks to ensure that his skipper goes nowhere in the winter.

The Sun has reported this week that Brighton are now considering a £10 million bid for Chelsea full-back Reece James and feel that the youngster could prove to be Bruno’s long-term replacement at the Amex Stadium.

The 18-year-old is significantly younger than Tavernier, so if Brighton are looking for their long-term replacement for Bruno, you would imagine that they would prefer to get something done for James.

The fee that they are apparently willing to spend on the teenager certainly suggests that he would be higher on their list of priorities for the January window.

Rangers keeping Tavernier through January would be a fantastic piece of business. And while there is obviously a very long way to go before the deadline, perhaps they have received a reason to be more optimistic about their chances of keeping the captain.
