Rangers’ Alfredo Morelos is a young and natural-born goalscorer – and could be the signing to take Derby County to the next level.

Reports in the Scotsman that five Championship clubs sent scouts to watch Alfredo Morelos continue his electrifying Rangers form with an eighth goal in nine games against Partick Thistle on Friday should come as no surprise.

A £1 million signing from HJK Helsinki, Rangers have tapped into a rather left-field market and unearthed a gleaming gem. Morelos, who scored 46 goals in 62 games in Finland, is a natural born-goalscorer and already looks like the Ibrox giants’ most inspired signing in recent memory.

No wonder, then, that Derby County are interested, along with Aston Villa, Barnsley, Bristol City and Reading.

The Rams’ need for a new goalscorer is not quite as clear as it was last season, where they scored fewer times than any other side in the top half of the Championship.

Yet, while club-record signing Matej Vydra looks to have finally found his form with four goals in just five starts this season, 32-year-old David Nugent is the only other forward to have found the net for Derby this season at the time of writing.

Andi Weimann has none in seven, Chris Martin is yet to win over manager Gary Rowett while Sam Winnall (below) is only on loan from Sheffield Wednesday and The Rams do not have an option to make his move permanent.

Morelos, however, is just 21 years of age and it is entirely possible that Derby believe he could be an excellent signing not just now but for the future as well.

Nugent and the currently injured Darren Bent are not getting any younger and the prospect of a Vydra – Morelos partnership is enough to get fans watering at the mouth.
