Newcastle United are expected to be extremely busy during the summer transfer window.

The Magpies enjoyed a thoroughly successful Championship campaign this season, and despite the odd blip here and there, they earned their placed in the Premier League by winning the title on the final day.
The hard work starts now, however, and Benitez must be smart in his player recruitment throughout the summer, if he intends to guide his side to a successful campaign in the top flight next term.
A particular area where the Spaniard will want to strengthen is in the central defensive department, what with Jamaal Lascelles having undergone surgery to help fix a groin injury and Grant Hanley seemingly no longer wanted by the club.
An interesting option for Newcastle would be Manchester United’s Chris Smalling, albeit a bold one.
The 27-year-old has incurred the wrath of Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho on numerous occasions this season, most notably for what the Portuguese has perceived as a lack of commitment to the cause.
Whether the apparent ill-feeling between player and manager will lead to the England international leaving the Theatre of Dreams this summer remains to be seen, but the Toon should certainly test United’s resolve by making an offer.

Standing at 6ft 4in, Smalling cuts a imposing figure, and is incredibly strong in the air. He is also fairly quick along the ground, which is quite unusual for someone so big.
The former Fulham man isn’t too shabby with he ball at his feet either, and with accomplished passing skills, he would slot into the Magpies’ back-line seamlessly.
He has proven himself at the very highest level, on a consistent basis throughout his career, and he would be a superb signing for the Tyneside outfit.
Smalling still has two years remaining on his contract at Old Trafford, so it will take a fairly substantial offer to prise him away from the club, although Newcastle should not have any problem in tempting United into selling the centre-back, with Mike Ashely expected to back Benitez to the hilt this summer.
