Everton defender Phil Jagielka would be the ideal summer signing for Newcastle United.

Magpies boss Rafa Benitez has a lot of work to do at St James’ Park this summer, if he is to build a squad capable of enjoying a successful Premier League campaign next term.
Whilst Newcastle already have plenty of sufficiently able players, and are arguably good enough to avoid the drop without making too many additions, they do seem to lack a certain amount of experience, especially defenders who have played at the highest level.
With that in mind, the addition of an experienced centre-back with Premier League experience will surely feature highly on Benitez’ wish-list, and who better than Toffees defender Phil Jagielka.

The 34-year-old’s future at Goodison Park is uncertain, after he told Sky Sports he is unsure where he will be playing his football next term.
And with just one-year remaining on his current deal with Everton, Newcastle could swoop in and prise him away from Ronald Koeman’s grasp.
The former Sheffield United centre-back would add a certain level of authority to the Toon’s defence, and his presence in and amongst the likes of Jamaal Lascelles and Ciaran Clark would surely be a major boost to their survival hopes.

Whilst he is past his best in terms of athleticism, Jagielka is one if the finest readers of the game in the league, and that more than makes up for his lack of pace.
He is also an expert at timing his jumps, which makes him very good in the air, despite being only 6ft tall.
One stumbling block could be Everton’s lack of willingness to sell, although if Koeman manages to bring in one of his top defensive targets, the 40-capped England international could be made surplus to requirements at Goodison.
If that is the case, Newcastle should not hesitate to swoop in.
