The Tottenham Hotspur boss is proving his credentials in Europe this season
Prior to Tottenham Hotspur’s return match against Real Madrid, all the talk was about the prospect of Harry Kane one day moving to Real Madrid, and after the game it would have been no surprise if all the angle had switched to Dele Alli one day rocking up at the Bernabeu after his brace on Wednesday evening.
But there is another Tottenham man who could be a more enticing target than both: Mauricio Pochettino.
The Argentine has worked wonders in North London and has now built a side capable of taking four points off Real in a double-header and putting them to the sword on a ‘home’ ground that is not even their own.
The simple fact is: the Tottenham boss is the real deal and the great and the good of the game are likely to be casting admiring glances in his direction, not just for his achievements in Europe this season but for how he plays the game and how he has quietly and effectively built a squad capable of going toe-to-toe with the best.
So could Real focus on Pochettino ahead of either Kane or Alli? Well, they could try. But something suggests the Spurs boss is in this for the long haul and, rather than jumping ship when an attractive offer comes along, he looks set to turn Tottenham into the next huge club.
It would may have been a laughable opinion a few years ago, but Tottenham can win the Champions League. They proved their quality this week, following up already impressive results against Real and Borussia Dortmund. And the longer Pochettino remains in North London, the better for all concerned.
