Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a move for Bilbao Athletic’s Gorka Guruzeta.
Tottenham Hotspur may have one of the best strikers in world football right now in Harry Kane, but that won’t stop them from being linked with other strikers to compete with the England ace.
Recent reports from Fichajes have suggested that Bilbao Athletic striker Gorka Guruzeta is a target for Spurs, though London rivals Chelsea are also interested.
Guruzeta, 21, has hit four goals in 10 games for Bilbao Athletic this season, and whilst that comes in the third tier of Spanish football, his exploits are attracting major interest.
Bilbao Athletic, serving as the reserve team for Athletic Bilbao, provide a place for young Basque players to feature before stepping up to the Bilbao first team, and one player who did just that already plays for Tottenham.
Striker Fernando Llorente started out his career with Basconia – just like Guruzeta – before moving up to Bilbao Athletic and eventually Athletic Bilbao, where he made his name with 118 goals in 333 games.
Llorente, who has also featured for Juventus, Sevilla and Swansea City, is now turning out for Spurs following a deadline day move, offering cover for Kane in Mauricio Pochettino’s attack.
Whilst he was born in San Sebastian – the home of Real Sociedad, the team his father played for – any young Basque striker will look up to Llorente, who is one of the most recognisable and successful Basque players of recent years.
Guruzeta would have the chance to play alongside and learn from Llorente if he joins Tottenham, and whilst joining Kane would no doubt be enticing, he may even find playing alongside ex-Athletic hero and fellow Basque striker Llorente even more appealing – and that may five Spurs an edge over Chelsea in the race for his signature.
