Leicester City must give serious consideration to their centre-back shortage, and the Everton man could find himself on the fringes this season.
Leicester City have hit upon a slight problem. Craig Shakespeare may already have had concerns about his choice of centre-backs, but now he may feel forced to act again with Robert Huth out for six-to-eight-weeks after having had an ankle operation, the Leicester City official website reports.
The announcement was made while the players were in Hong King for their pre-season Premier League Asia Trophy matches.
Craig Shakespeare was pleased to say Huth’s operation had gone well, with the Foxes report saying: “Robert reported back for pre-season and got into some discomfort with the ankle. He had an operation and thankfully it was successful.”
Everton’s Phil Jagielka in action
Leicester City have Wes Morgan and new signing Harry Maguire as their recognised centre-backs, but would be advised to move for another defender in the transfer market.
Shakespeare would not be doing much wrong if he looked at Phil Jagielka. The Everton captain is not assured of a starting place at Goodison since Michael Keane signed, reports the Liverpool Echo.
Sheffield United have expressed an interest in Jagielka, but they may find his wages too high, according to the Daily Star.
Jagielka would not have to drop down a league though if Leicester came in for him and while he may struggle to start games at Everton, Jagielka could prove to be the best defender in the Foxes squad if he signed.
However, Jagielka would not be wise to swap one bench for another. He would need some assurances which could be a sticking point about him moving to another Premier League club. Jagielka is now 34 and has been a great servant to Everton, where he has played since 2007.
Leaving the club would be difficult for Jagielka, but Leicester City could probably offer him good wages if they could sign him on loan until January. Jagielka is currently contracted at Everton until next summer, reports the club’s official website.
