Nottingham Forest should throw their hat into the ring as Aston Villa, Sunderland and QPR all target Peterborough United hotshot Britt Assombalonga.

By the time January rolls around, it will be three-and-a-half years since Nottingham Forest shattered their transfer record to sign Britt Assombalonga from Peterborough United.

Though the £5.5 million they invested in the powerhouse striker certainly paid off, as reported by the BBC. Assombalonga bagged an impressive 30 goals in 65 Championship games for Forest despite suffering a serious injury during his first season – and earned the club a cool £10 million profit when leaving for Middlesbrough in the summer.

But should the success of this deal have Forest considering that latest highly-rated striker to emerge from Peterborough United. Like Assombalonga, not to mention Dwight Gayle, Jack Marriott has made a real breakthrough at London Road and has emerged as one of the most in-demand players in League One prior to the January transfer window.

The Mail claims that Marriott, who has scored 17 goals for The Posh since signing from Luton Town in the summer, is on the radar of Aston Villa, Sunderland and Queens Park Rangers.

The report adds that Marriott could be available for around £2.5 million – and you can see why Sunderland are in particular keen on striking a bargain deal for the speedy Marriott. He’s an instinctive goalscorer – and could compensate for the loss of Lewis Grabban should his loan spell on Wearside be ended by Bournemouth.

But while Forest boast far more depth and quality in attack on paper, their top scoring striker, Daryl Murphy, has just seven in 18 games. Youngsters Jason Cummings and Ben Brereton have just two between them as well.

So perhaps Forest should enquire about Marriott too. If he can replicate the impact of Assombalonga, he’d be a fine signing.
