Celtic are reportedly close to a big summer signing but how could it impact their star player?

According to a report from the Mirror, Celtic and Manchester City are in advanced talks to seal a permanent deal for winger Patrick Roberts.

Should the move happen it would be an outstanding piece of business from the Bhoys, but it could also be a statement of intent that helps them keep their star player Moussa Dembele.

The young French forward has been sensational since arriving at Celtic Park from Fulham last summer, scoring 32 goals in 49 matches and subsequently being linked with a move to AC Milan (Scottish Daily Record).

However, Dembele is still only 20 and he should remain at Celtic to form a formidable attacking partnership with Roberts.

Both players are only going to get better the older they get, and with a contract until the summer of 2020 there is no rush for Dembele to move on.

Celtic's Moussa Dembele

Celtic took a risk on him last season when others dithered and he rewarded them with a free-scoring campaign. Now it is his turn to show faith in a Celtic side that will be looking to not only repeat their outstanding domestic achievements this season but also improve in the Champions League.

The only way to do that is with players like Dembele in the side, and if Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers forks out for Roberts it should make the Frenchman forward aware of the club’s ambitions.

The future looks bright for the Bhoys and Dembele would be best served staying exactly where he is. After all, Roberts has thrived there and a permanent transfer would show just how highly he rates them.
