Leeds United youngster has been starring for the under-23s.

While Adam Forshaw is set to star for Leeds over the second half of the season, he may not be the only new face in midfield.

Oriol Rey’s performances for the under-23s have been so encouraging that he is putting himself into position for a potential call up to the first team if he continues.

Rey was signed from Barcelona’s academy in the summer and has been a regular for Leeds’ under-23s this season.

Signed as a defender, in recent weeks he has excelled as a midfielder for Leeds and was once again impressive in the win over Huddersfield on Monday night.

As you would expect from a player from Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, Rey is comfortable in possession and is a strong passer.

Leeds have just sent Mateusz Klich out on loan and Eunan O’Kane is suspended for another two matches.

Now would be an ideal time for manager Thomas Christiansen to call up Rey and get him involved with the first team.

He has been by far Leeds’ most consistent player for the under-23s this season and his versatility is an asset which could pay off if he makes the step up.

With Yosuke Ideguchi out on loan until the end of the season, Rey may have limited time to make the leap before his competition gets tougher.

If he can make the jump up it will send a positive message to the rest of the under-23s. So far the signs are encouraging that he has the potential to do so.
