Everton’s Gareth Barry and James McCarthy are reportedly on the radar of Newcastle United and West Bromwich Albion respectively.

According to The Mirror, Everton could block Gareth Barry from leaving the club for West Bromwich Albion in the summer transfer window.

It has been reported that Newcastle United are interested in signing James McCarthy from Everton this summer.

The deal has yet to go through due to a transfer fee being agreed by the two clubs, according to the report, which has also claimed that Barry does not want to become a substitute player.

James McCarthy of Everton (R) scores his sides second goal during the Premier League match between Everton and AFC Bournemouth at Goodison Park on February 4, 2017 in Liverpool, England.

“Meanwhile, Gareth Barry could be blocked from quitting Goodison Park for West Brom amid uncertainty about James McCarthy’s future,” states the report in The Mirror.

“Ireland international McCarthy continues to interest Newcastle, but the fee is so far proving a sticking point.

“Barry is keen to extend his career and does not want to spend time on the bench playing a bit-part role.”

Does this mean that if Newcastle and Everton are unable to settle on a fee for McCarthy, then the 26-year-old Republic of Ireland international could reman at Goodison Park for the 2017-18 campaign?

Would the Toffees then be willing to sell Barry to West Brom, given that the Merseyside outfit already strong in the midfield department and could sign Gylfi Sigurdsson, as reported by The Mirror.

However, if McCarthy leaves for Newcastle this summer, could Everton still let Barry join West Brom, if the 36-year-old former Aston Villa and Manchester City midfielder does not want to remain at Goodison Park due to limited playing time?
