Newcastle United were said to be interested in Everton’s Ross Barkley during the summer transfer window.

Newcastle were tentatively linked with Barkley in the summer, but they never seemed likely to be able to meet Everton’s asking price.
However, Barkley didn’t seal a move elsewhere, and his contract is now dangerously close to running out at Goodison Park.

Everton know that January will be the last window where they will be able to pick up a fee for the England international, and that could leave Newcastle in with a chance of completing a transfer which Rafael Benitez would love.
Benitez is said to be a major fan of Barkley, and the 24-year-old would certainly improve the quality of Newcastle’s midfield options.
Barkley may have missed this season so far through injury, but he possesses a vast amount of creativity and has an explosive turn of pace, when needed.

Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea are also said to be keen, but with the World Cup looming on the horizon, Barkley may want first-team chances immediately.
Moving to Newcastle would present him with a chance of getting the regular action that he craves, and Benitez’s side may just have a chance of completing a transfer which would have to be seen as a sizeable coup in January now.
