The Manchester United midfielder could replace Mohamed Diame at Newcastle United.
Newcastle United are hoping to receive an injection of funds ahead of the January transfer window.
A proposed takeover of the club is on course to be completed by then, which should remove the shackles that have restricted Toon boss Rafa Benitez over the previous 12 months.
With Mo Diame being eyed by Aston Villa (the Mirror, printed edition, page 47), a physically imposing central midfielder could be high on Newcastle’s agenda.
And if Benitez’s past interest is anything to go by, an approach for Manchester United’s Marouane Fellaini could be on the Spaniard’s agenda.
Benitez wanted Fellaini on loan during his time at Napoli (the Telegraph), but the Belgian managed to turn around his Old Trafford career.
Nevertheless, with his contract due to expire at the end of the campaign, speculation about Fellaini’s future at Manchester United has began to resurface.
And the 29-year-old could be sold for as little as £8 million in the coming transfer window (the Mirror) – £21 million less than the Red Devils paid Everton for his services four years ago (Transfermarkt).
Whether Fellaini would fancy a move to Newcastle remains to be seen, although as Benitez has already proved – luring Dwight Gayle and Matt Ritchie down to the Championship – the Toon boss can be quite persuasive.
