Newcastle United are gunning for promotion back to the Premier League.

Newcastle United’s victory over Brighton & Hove Albion yesterday has edged them even closer to the Premier League.

Newcastle are currently leading the way in the Championship table, and have an eight point cushion inside the automatic promotion spaces.

The Magpies are likely to already have one eye on signings for next season, should they be promoted.

Rafael Benitez will be under no illusions that Newcastle will need to add to their squad, if they are to compete at the top level again.

And one player who could be one Newcastle’s wishlist is Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres.

Benitez linked up with Torres at Liverpool earlier in their respective careers, and the Spanish international enjoyed great success.

Torres became one of the most feared strikers in the Premier League under Benitez’s guidance, and he would make a high profile addition for Newcastle, if he was to return to England.

Torres may have lost some of his previously electric pace now, but his contract at Atletico is due to expire at the end of the season, meaning he could be available on a free transfer.

And Torres’ quality and experience could be crucial to Newcastle, if they were to be promoted.

Torres does not play regularly for Atleti, but he is often used in the big matches by Diego Simeone, which proves that he still has a part to play.

And if Newcastle could land him on a free transfer, it would surely be a very tempting addition for Benitez to make.
