Newcastle United are thought to be chasing Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe.

Sunderland's Jermain Defoe

With Newcastle United apparently chasing Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe (The Sun), there could effectively be a swap deal on the table that suits both parties in the deal available.

Sunderland fans, obviously, are hoping that Defoe does not make a switch to their rivals.

But the harsh reality is, that Newcastle are now in a position where the veteran forward would have to consider a move if Rafael Benitez’s side came in for him.

Defoe has expressed a desire to play in the Premier League, and Newcastle could offer him that.

Defoe’s arrival at Newcastle is still a long way off, but if he did sign, then Daryl Murphy’s future at St. James’ Park would be put into doubt.

Daryl Murphy of Newcastle United scores their first goal

Murphy has played an important role for Newcastle this season, and has scored some crucial goals.

In truth, the Magpies may not have won the Championship, if they didn’t bring in Murphy last summer – such has his importance been.

And Sunderland could benefit from making a move for Murphy, as they look to replace Defoe after his inevitable departure.

Murphy actually spent five years with Sunderland earlier in his career, and never really scored prolifically at the Stadium of Light.

But a move to Ipswich Town seems to have developed him as a player, and his goalscoring record has been impressive since.

Murphy is unquestionably a weapon at Championship level, and would guarantee Sunderland goals.

And, although Defoe’s departure to Newcastle would not go down well on Wearside, Murphy’s arrival at Sunderland could soften the blow slightly.
