Newcastle United may perhaps be keeping one eye on Liverpool’s fortunes during the coming weeks
Danny Ings may not have played a single minute of Premier League football since the 2015/16 season, but the Northern Echo reports that Newcastle are keen to bring the forward to St James’ Park during the January transfer window.
The Times recently reported that the Liverpool man rejected a move to the Magpies in the summer, but Rafa Benitez may have been forgiven for thinking that Newcastle’s chances of landing him in January may be enhanced if his wait for top flight football continues until the next window opens.
Ings is coming to what should be the peak years of his career, so it would be understandable if the 25-year-old started to become frustrated if he was not given the chance to prove his fitness by getting minutes under his belt in the first-team.
If there is any frustration, that may perhaps open the door for Newcastle to make their move in January, and based on how little he has used him, Jurgen Klopp may have few qualms about letting him leave.
But perhaps the door for Ings at Liverpool has actually opened ever so slightly.
Mane has previously been absent this season and Ings has not replaced him, but the former Burnley man has been playing regularly for the under-23s now so perhaps he may come into Klopp’s thoughts as he looks to fill the void that Mane looks set to leave.
And it may just take one inspired moment from Ings during the next six weeks – which he is certainly capable of – for the forward to force his way back into Klopp’s plans on a regular basis and take a potential move to Newcastle off the table entirely.
